Cairns Tours, Cruises & Activities

Here in Tropical North Queensland, we like to say we live in Nature’s Theme Park, and the activities and attractions here are renowned the world over. From the spectacular Great Barrier Reef to World Heritage-listed rainforests and all in between, your holiday can be as active or as relaxing as you wish.

Do ask us when you arrive about special interests and preferred activities, however here are some ideas to get you started:

Kuranda Village, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway And Kuranda Scenic Railway

One of the ‘must-do’ visitor attractions is this great day trip. Skyrail, the world’s most beautiful rainforest experience, is located very close to Yorkeys Knob. A 7km cablecar ride, Skyrail transfers you to Kuranda, the village in the rainforest where you’ll discover many attractions, cafes, shops and markets. Transfer back down the range with the picture postcard Kuranda Scenic Railway on antique railway carriages, as you watch views stretching across the canefields to the Coral Sea.

Hot Air Ballooning

The perfect weather conditions in the Highlands behind Cairns make it an ideal location for hot air ballooning. The landscape at sunrise is stunning, as you drift quietly across the patchwork of agricultural land and forests. Come back to earth and relive the experience with your fellow travellers as you tuck in to a breakfast of orange juice, champagne, eggs and bacon, tropical fruits and more. Have an early night beforehand – ballooning tours depart early at 4.30am!

The Atherton Tablelands

The Highlands or Tablelands are an elevated, naturally air-conditioned plateaux about an hours’ drive away. Nature and lifestyle have combined to produce an intoxicating mix up here. The Tablelands are rainforests, national parks, rivers, lakes and waterfalls, plus delightfully charming townships and attractions to stop and marvel at. Highlights include Millstream Falls, the extinct volcano crater lakes of Barrine and Eacham, Bromfield Swamp and the Mareeba Wetlands (a must for birdwatchers) and the Hypipamee National Park with its bottomless crater near Herberton.

Port Douglas, Daintree And Cape Tribulation

Another not-to-be-missed day trip from Yorkeys Knob. Your adventure begins on the highway – a coastal drive rated as one of Australia’s most scenic. The mountains meet the sea, and the drive is dotted with palm fringed tropical beaches, hidden coves and rugged headlands. Experience Port Douglas, the international resort village beside the sea, then continue on to the Daintree rainforest through the old sugar town of Mossman with its beautiful refreshing Mossman Gorge swimming area. Drive on through the enchanted Daintree rainforest to Cape Tribulation to see this spectacular sweep of beach. All the roads are sealed all the way to Cape Tribulation.

Paronella Park And The Innisfail Region

The drive south of Cairns is equally beautiful. Lush cane fields and high, rainforest covered peaks are the landmarks here. After stopping at the seaside town of Innisfail, don’t miss a trip to Paronella Park, an attraction that is both historic and cultural. One man’s dream, Paronella Park is a Spanish Castle ruin from the early 1900s beside a beautiful river and waterfall. The exotic and extensive gardens planted by the originator, Jose Paronella, are included in the tours here.

The Great Barrier Reef

Exploring the reef is both exhilarating and wonderfully easy. You can snorkel or scuba dive, with all equipment provided on the cruises that depart daily to the reef, view the reef without getting wet from an underwater observatory or a semi submersible cruise through the coral gardens, or take a scenic flight on a helicopter or fixed wing aircraft. Either way, its simply spectacular! All tour operators offer pick ups and drop offs from The York Apartments.

Kite Surfing At Yorkeys Knob

Kite surfing, one of the newest sports to take off in Australia, has really hit the beach of Yorkeys Knob. Under ideally perfect conditions, the kite surfers are here on the beach most afternoons and watching their colourful sails skim across the blue waters as the riders seek the next gust of wind is mesmerising. Both experienced kite surfers and novices are catered for with onsite tuition. Have a go!

Are you the adventurous type who likes to live on the edge, take a chance and play hard?

If that’s a YES then we have the package just for you! Cairns and surrounds is the mecca for adventure. We can offer you a great place to stay as close to the beautiful beach at Yorkeys as you can get (there are just a few metres of road between us and the beach right out the front door). And, we are centrally located to the action sports all close-by that include just some of the following:

AJ Hacket Bungy Jump.
Barron River white water rafting or Tully River white water rafting.
Skydive Cairns (14,000 foot skydive) from $219 or Helicopter to the reef.
Float Planes, feel the rush of landing on water in an authentic 1950’s Beaver float plane landing right out on the Reef.
Warbirds adventure flights (aerobatics from zero to hero).
Kite Surfing (Yorkeys Knob is Kite Surfing Central with reliable wind) tuition and hire from Yorkeys Beach.
Go Karts, we have 2 awesome tracks in the Cairns area with karts able to reach 160km/h.
ATV’s, you reckon your fit, have a go on these 4x4 250cc bad boys for half a day and see just how fit you are. Not just for farmers they’re grouse fun!
Cable Ski/Wakeboarding or Wakeboarding behind a boat and Parasailing.
Of course there’s also the reef where you can snorkel or dive.
And Cairns has plenty of night clubs and bars just 10 minutes up the road if you have any energy left at night.
These are just some of the attractions nearby, there are many more besides. Whatever you fancy to get some adrenalin pumping we have it. All you have to do is get here, book into your room and we will take care if it from there.

Steve from Adelaide.

We came for work and wound up having a ball, what a great place to live, you are very lucky. Great beach, good eats, nice and friendly local Boat Club and so laid back you can get plenty of sleep. I normally stay in Cairns but now I know where to stay! Loved the unit too, nice and spacious, just like a little home. I will be back. Steve from Adelaide.

Mark and Emma, Bendigo Victoria.

Awesome fishing thanks Karen, from the charter out of the Yorkeys Knob Marina to just tossing a lure around off the breakwater just a five minute stroll away and actually bagging a 70cm Barra it was outstanding. River, estuary and crabbing, we were exhausted. Nice unit too and all the gear we needed to cook out catch right there, too good. Thanks and see you next time (hopefully soon) Mark and Emma, Bendigo Victoria.

Karen and Graham. Albert and Pauline, Sydney Australia.

What a spot for the golf nut! Nice and quiet and relaxing and with all those great courses nearby! We even got to dodge the Croc’s on the fairway at Half Moon Bay. Great fun!  We loved the meals and cold drinks at the Boat Club on the deck looking out to sea. All we could have wanted and lots of golf. Thanks Karen and Graham. Albert and Pauline, Sydney Australia.

Thanks again, Peter and Sue Birmingham UK.

Thanks Karen, your local knowledge was great and you were great helping us pick out and book our reef trips and tours. I am sure we would have wasted a lot of our time and money without your help. Loved the reef and Skyrail and ballooning at dawn was just awesome. Thanks again, Peter and Sue Birmingham UK.

Kerry and Simon Perth WA.

They said you had one of the best beaches in the world for Kite Surfing and it didn’t disappoint. We had a ball and the flat was great to come back to at the end of the day to relax and recharge. It was also a great stepping off point for tours and day trips sort of in the middle of everything and close enough to Cairns for shopping and eats. All round great time, thanks guys. Great beach, great marina, great hospitality and fantastic units, no wonder I come back every year and will be back next year too. Thanks Karen and Graham. Jim from Albany WA.

Great beach! Kelvin and Gloria, Montreal Canada.

It’s not often you go somewhere that keeps every promise advertised, well done. From the extensive free library and the DVD selection, the paddle board, bikes and other amenities right down to the unit being just as described. Just walk in and relax with all you need included, it was great. Now we know why the locals spend their weekends there. Great beach! Kelvin and Gloria, Montreal Canada.

The Hudsons Thornlie WA.

Let’s be honest, the units are not brand new but they are clean and very comfortable you couldn’t want for more. The gardens and grounds are lovely and we made good use of the barby out back. You made us feel very welcome. Thanks again The Hudsons Thornlie WA.

Loved it. Jaqui and Bruce, Mt Eliza Victoria.
